Colchester Zoo is a super family attraction at any time of the year. Opened in 1963, Colchester Zoo is a leading conservation and breeding centre as well as a fun family day out.
Colchester Zoo is home to 200 species set in 60 acres of parkland and lakes! As you navigate your way around Colchester Zoo you’ll visit many different habitats and see animals from around the world, from the humid home of our Komodo Dragons to our very own Africa plain, home to white rhino, giraffes, ostrich, zebra and kudu!
Play Areas at Colchester Zoo
As you walk around the Zoo you will come across plenty of different outdoor adventure play areas perfect for the kids to let off some steam, with benches, toilet facilities and snack shops also close by each area.
Lost Madagascar Train
The Lost Madagascar Express will take visitors across countries and continents, led by a ranger guide before disembarking at Lost Madagascar, where the adventure will really begin…
The Interactive Area is located within Colchester Zoo’s Discovery Centre!
Stop by and make your own landscape out of sand and watch as rivers and mountains appear with the changing levels you create! With African savannah & dinosaur themes, you will be able to see some well-known species walking on the land that you’ve created!
As well as this fantastic interactive sand pit, you can also create your own creature and watch it come to life on a big screen! Simply choose your animal, colour a funky design and scan it in to see your creation amongst the other animals on screen.
With two themes, including an underwater ocean scene and a prehistoric dinosaur landscape, you can create many different designs during your visits.
