Worthing - Oranges & Lemons Flingathon The 14-year-old Durrington High School pupil was left paralysed from the waist down after falling from a tree last summer. The flingathon, organised by the Worthing Sentinel, a sister paper of The Argus, will take place on Sunday, March 14. It will be staged on the shingle and sands opposite the Beach Hotel, Marine Parade, at 3pm. The event commemorates the sinking, in 1901, of the SS Indiana, which spewed its cargo of fruit into the sea. Tens of thousands of oranges and lemons washed up, sparking a mad free-for-all as beachcombers descended in droves to claim the zesty spoils. The first orange and lemon will be whacked into the sea with a cricket bat to mark the January 2008 Ice Prince wood wreck when thousands of tons of timber came in on the tide. The flingathon is open to all ages and each throw costs £1.Prizes will be awarded for the orange and lemon thrown the furthest. Organiser Paul Holden, editor of The Sentinel, said: “I am always delighted to see so many families turn up year after year.“It's a smashing community event, and much more fun than sitting at home watching TV.“The flingathon will definitely go ahead no matter what the weather, which has in the past been atrocious. “Let's raise as much money as we can for Lauren, who could represent Great Britain in tennis at the 2012 Paralympics.” The flingathon, now in its fifth year, has raised hundreds of pounds for St Barnabas House hospice, Worthing, the Queen Alexandra Hospital-Home for disabled ex-servicemen, Worthing, and the RNLI. BLOB: Holden would be grateful if people could turn up at least 30 minutes before the 3pm start to register. The Beach opposite The Beach Hotel, Marine Parade, Worthing, West Sussex, BN11 3QJ.
