Thomas Event Back on Track after Bridge Damage at the Spa Valley Railway
The planned Thomas the Tank Engine Event at the Spa Valley Railway this weekend and next will go ahead as planned as recent major damage to one of the railway bridges has now been repaired.
Chairman Chris MacRae said: “Our contractors have repaired the damage done by the bridge strike by an over height Heavy Goods Vehicle. This required a road closure by the two county council roads authorities. This disruption has caused us a lot of lost revenue and having to re plan operations due to curtailed services. It has placed huge strain on our volunteers, but thankfully we are now open again and able to run our scheduled services including “Days Out With Thomas” and our “CAMRA Beer Festival”. We are incredibly grateful to our loyal customers and supporters and to all our external partners who have pulled out all the stops to assist us during this difficult time to try and reopen the railway in time for Thomas’s arrival this weekend. Ongoing work with County and Borough Councils to prevent recurrences of such bridge strikes by over height vehicles continues.”
Visitors to the railway this weekend and next (30 Sept and 1st, 7th and 8th October 2017) can meet Thomas the Tank Engine and some of his friends from the famous railway stories including Diesel and Daisy and of course the Fat Controller. Everyone can also take a journey on a real steam train and take part in Thomas-themed activities.
Families can start their journey at Tunbridge Wells West Station before taking the branch line train to visit Thomas at Ffarquhar. After spending an hour at Ffarquhar, including meeting Thomas and the Fat Controller, watch Thomas shunting trucks or taking part in story re-enactments before returning to Tunbridge Wells again hauled by one of Thomas’s friends.
There will be further attractions in the engine shed at Tunbridge Wells West to enjoy before and after your train journey including the Imagination Station, Face Painting / Temporary Tattoos, and Vintage Penny Machines. There is also a buffet car and Thomas gift shop. The 15.10 train is also the Fat Controllers Tea Party (must be booked in advance) and is hauled by Thomas in one direction!
Special fares apply, which are cheaper if booked in advance, on the day prices: In advance:
